Mid-century grocering in the Twin Cities

I think prior to say 1980 my peoples were accustomed to shopping for groceries at Applebaum’s, Red Owl, or Knowlan’s.  These entities did not go away, they ended up corporatized in the ensuing years, rebranded and made into bigger things…. Rainbow for one.

I knew vaguely the Applebaum’s were still around.  As a matter of ‘time’ I wouldn’t have guessed someone plying the trade in the 40s – 50s – 60s was still around.

Then Cub.  Cub was a thing to us in the 80’s once we moved to the Stillwater area.  Stillwater had Cub.  Ditto, s a matter of ‘time’ I wouldn’t have guessed someone plying the trade in the 40s – 50s – 60s was still around.

Was driving up Century in Oakdale a week ago.  There still is a Knowlan’s storefront on Century and Stillwater Blvd it seems.  Has signage like its active.  I haven’t been in there since 1978 I’d guess.
